Restaurant Online Ordering: Build a Direct Channel

Plan a direct restaurant ordering channel with a clear menu, accurate collection information, payment checks, and a reliable kitchen handover.

Delivery platforms and direct ordering channels provide different ways to reach guests. Compare the current fees, customer-data access, fulfilment responsibilities, and terms for each channel. A direct channel also needs a plan for attracting visitors, handling payments, and supporting customers.

The Aggregator Trap

Evaluate a direct ordering setup using your own menu and operations. Check whether orders enter your existing workflow or require manual re-entry. Confirm the integration, fees, and support arrangements instead of assuming every online ordering product provides the same functionality.

What a Good Direct Ordering Setup Looks Like

The best direct ordering setups are invisible to the customer — they just feel like a fast, clean, branded experience. No redirect to a third-party URL. No commission watermark. Just your menu, your brand, your customer data.

  • Branded ordering page on your own domain or subdomain
  • Full menu sync with your POS — price changes propagate automatically
  • Scheduled pickup and delivery time slots to manage kitchen load
  • Saved addresses and re-order for returning customers
  • Direct customer data: email, order history, preferences — yours to use

The Aggregator Co-existence Strategy

Going direct doesn't mean abandoning aggregators entirely — at least not immediately. The smart move is to use aggregators for customer acquisition (they are good at that) while systematically converting those customers to direct. A QR code in your delivery bag linking to your direct ordering page with a first-order discount is a simple, proven tactic.

Operational Integration is Everything

The single biggest reason restaurants have bad online ordering experiences is fragmentation. A third-party order arrives, someone has to manually enter it into the POS, mistakes happen, tickets get lost. Full POS integration means every online order — whether from your direct channel or an aggregator — flows into the same KDS queue as dine-in orders. One view, one workflow, zero manual entry.
